Retail unit keeps property deal sweet

Property agency Barker Storey Matthews acted for the landlord in securing new tenant, Mr Simms Old Sweet Shoppe for a Grade II listed retail unit in the conservation area of Bury St Edmunds.

The retail premises at 16a Buttermarket Street had been recently refurbished and offered 864 sq ft of space in total across three floors, with a ground floor shop area of 195 sq ft and ancillary office and storage space on floors one and two.

The new tenant is a franchisee of the national sweet shop chain and has taken a new, ten year lease on the premises which are owned by The Hitchin Property Trust. Nearby occupiers are the market town’s branch of Marks and Spencer, The Body Shop and JD Sports – among other high street chain occupiers.

Simon Burton, Director, Barker Storey Matthews Bury St Edmunds office, who led the agency’s marketing of 16a Buttermarket Street, said, “The new tenants had been looking for retail premises in which to launch their new venture for a while. They were keen to act quickly to secure this unit when it became available to let as there is a paucity of vacant units in the town, particularly in such a prominent location.

“Within eight days of completing the deal, Mr Simms Old Sweet Shoppe was up and running and it is reported that business is brisk.”
