Leading Birmingham civil and structural engineering consultancy CWA Ltd has been appointed to deliver the civil and structural engineering work for a futuristic new low carbon technology centre at Coventry University.

The consultancy will work on the multi-million project on Coventry University’s Technology Park. The centre, next to the university’s recently- launched £7 million National Transport Design Centre, will spearhead research into advanced powertrains for the clean and green cars of the future.

The new facility – led by Coventry University and German-based international engineering service provider FEV – will allow leading international names in the automotive and aerospace industries to test and improve performance and emissions on a range of different powertrain concepts, including hybrid, electric, conventional and alternative fuel propulsion systems.

The centre will be developed by Coventry University and used by FEV. The two organisations will work together on research and development projects and research into advanced powertrain development. The centre will initially have the capacity for four state-of-the-art engine test beds, with the option to extend to eight. The centre will also support the development of an industry-led PhD programme.

CWA director Jim O’Donnell said the cutting-edge centre would be a major new contribution to the university’s existing technology park, creating a cluster of transport related research and development facilities.

“We are excited to be involved in this important project which will include some world-leading features.. We were involved in the civil engineering work for the National Transport Design Centre at the university, and together these projects will make a significant contribution to the local economy while supporting the motor industry, research and education, and the development of engineering talent,” he said.

Birmingham city centre-based CWA is one of the regions’ leading civil and structural engineering and design consultancies, providing services to a wide range of high-value projects to blue chip clients nationwide..

CWA has almost doubled in size in the last two years, and now employs more than 40 staff. Major clients include IM Properties, Seddon, Seven Capital, Prologis, Places for People, Court Collaboration and Cinnamon Care Capital.
