County Surveyors explores canal network for Woodenspoon Charity

Anthony Wiggins, Director at Wiggins Lockett Thompson Chartered Surveyors has completed his “dawn to dusk” cycling challenge, to cover as many miles of the Birmingham and Back Country canal network. Anthony completed his challenge on the 1st February raising several hundred pounds and covering 46 muddy and icy miles along the network, starting and finishing at the Stewpony Bridge west of Stourbridge after reaching the centre of Birmingham and tackling the Netherton Tunnel twice.

Anthony describes his challenge as,
“The trip starting out as an Enid Blytonesque jaunt through the sunny countryside and finishing battling rain, headwinds and exhaustion in a desperate attempt to get back to the car before my torch batteries ran out. A persistent puncture at Nechells meant that I had to walk eight miles along the Tame Valley Canal which isn’t the most interesting stretch. The sights seen under the canal bridges of Birmingham however, will be forever burned into my retinas, so at least that something memorable to take home. The 2.4 km Netherton Tunnel is simply mind altering in its unnerving length – especially when you have to do it twice.”

Anthony, who is plainly a glutton for discomfort and punishment, is now bracing himself for another uncomfortable experience for Woodenspoon after being volunteered to take part in a 10k endurance race in Ironbridge at the end of the month.
