Award for the college that is keeping mechanics up to date with skills

City College Southampton has been honoured with an employer recognition award by The Institute of the Motoring Industry Skills Sector Council.

The college has been granted the award in recognition of its motor vehicle department achieving endorsement to deliver the Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA).

Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA Light Vehicle Inspections) is a national voluntary scheme which tests the current competence of individuals working in the retail motor industry, who are committed to an ethical code of conduct. Currently, City College is one of only two in the UK who have been granted the employer recognition award by the IMI.

The award, collected by Lawrence Roe, Curriculum Team Leader – Motor Vehicle & Apprenticeships, also recognises the high level of dedication the college has to the Continued Professional Development (CPD) of staff in the department.

Lawrence said: “There has been growing demand for an independent sign of quality and professionalism in the automotive industry, which we rightly agreed with. We were happy when the Employer Recognition Scheme was brought in and feel proud to be a recipient of the award today. This gives people who train with us confidence that those teaching them are at the top of their game.”

City College’s motor vehicle department trains hundreds of people, from all walks of life, every year. Learners include school leavers, apprentices and employees from local companies who attend to keep their skills up to date and learn new ones.

Among the companies City College’s motor vehicle department provides training for are Southern Vectis, Adams Morey, MC Truck & Bus, Hunters Auto Electrical Engineers, Barnes Daf and MOD.
