Anglo Holt completes waste recycling plant

West Midlands construction company Anglo Holt has completed a £3.1 million waste recycling plant in Daventry.

The facility, built on behalf of Earthworm PLC, was a new departure for the West Bromwich-based company.

The plant will handle approximately 145,000 tonnes of food and green waste every year, which will be supplied through waste collection agencies in the Daventry and Nuneaton areas.

The facility includes a reception hall with a volume of 6,060m3 where waste is received and pre-processed prior to transfer into the composters, 10 vertical composting vessels, and a maturation hall containing six aeration bays that are each capable of holding approximately 480m3 of maturing compost.

Each bay has a ducted air system to allow air to be forced through the material to accelerate the maturation process and to remove the need for the regular manual turning that would otherwise be necessary at this stage of the process.

Both the reception building and the maturation hall are fully enclosed and air inside the buildings is maintained at negative pressure to minimise external odours.

A below ground drainage system has been installed to contain the water run-off from the composting process.

Anglo Holt carried out all the construction work while VCU Europa Limited installed the 10 vertical composters.

Anglo Holt director Tony Wehby said: “This was a unique project for Anglo Holt as we hadn’t built a waste recycling plant before. However, we have all the expertise needed for the job and relished the opportunity to work on a project that presented new challenges for our team.”
