Acorn team tops Welsh Three Peaks challenge to help young CMV sufferer

A team from Wales’ leading recruitment and training agency has raised over £1,600 for charity by completing the gruelling Welsh three peaks challenge.

The three-strong team from Acorn climbed Snowdon, Pen-Y-Fan and Cadair Idris in an impressive nine hours and 31 minutes – smashing their target of 12 hours – to raise funds  towards a specially adapted trike to help a two year-old boy with limited mobility.

The Tomcat Tiger Trike, which costs £2,000, is for two year old Noah Dodd from Gloucester who was born with Cytomegalovirus (CMV).

The dedicated hiking team was made up of Noah’s Godfather Marc Jones, Operations Manager for Acorn’s Construction, Mechanical & Electrical Recruitment Division, David Smith, Recruitment Consultant, and Lawrence Beach, Construction Manager. .

Marc said: “We embarked on this challenge to do something special for an inspirational little boy, who, at such a young age, has been through so much already.

“We trained hard to make sure that we wouldn’t let Noah down and we were really pleased with our time. We are extremely grateful to everyone who donated to our Just Giving fund and we really hope that this will make a significant contribution to the new trike.”

Noah was born with CMV, a virus very similar to chicken pox, which greatly affected him in the womb and has led him to be severely brain damaged, visually impaired, profoundly deaf and spastic quadriplegic. Noah is unable to sit up or stand unaided, meaning he has limited mobility as a result.

The Tomcat Tiger Trike, recommended by Noah’s Physiotherapist, will help aid his movement, assist Noah’s muscle tone and support his lung capacity. The trike will be designed specifically to Noah’s measurements and is purpose built for disabled children. It will also give him a little independence which a normal child of his age has.

Acorn has built a reputation for its fundraising and support of the local communities it works within.

Nathan Reid, Head of Operations for Construction Trades and Engineering at Acorn said: “Marc, Lawrence and David should be incredibly proud of what they achieved both in terms of the physical challenge and the impressive amount of money they have raised so far. Hopefully by completing the Three Peaks, they will have made a real difference to Noah’s life.”
