HLM reinforces landscape architecture and urban design team with two new appointments

HLM, a leading multi-disciplinary design practice, has reinforced its dedicated landscape architecture and urban design service in Cardiff with the appointment of two new members of staff, enabling it to provide a dedicated and local service in landscape architecture, urban design and master-planning.

Mark Lawton and Jan Taylor have been appointed as landscape architects and will be responsible for HLM’s projects in Wales and the South West, while supporting the wider team across the UK and internationally. The team in Cardiff is equipped to offer the full spectrum of design services to its clients, from traditional architecture and master-planning, to landscape architecture and management, urban and interior design services to its clients.

Simon Bell, associate director at HLM responsible for the landscape and urban design team, said: “It’s great to have Jan and Mark on board in Cardiff. Landscape architecture relies heavily on local knowledge and we are in a great position to offer a really high-quality and bespoke service to our clients in Wales.”

Over the last 12 months, HLM in Cardiff has doubled in size, bringing the total headcount to 26 after winning a string of new contracts in the health, education, commercial sectors.  These include the design of the £400 million Enderby Wharf commercial and residential development project in Greenwich and the design of the £250 million Defence College of Logistics, Policing and Administration at Worthy Down in Hampshire.

With more than 12 years’ experience in landscape architecture, Mr Lawton joins HLM from Cardiff Council, bringing with him design experience which spans the education, residential and public realm sectors. He is currently a committee member of the Wales branch of the Landscape Institute and will be responsible for overseeing the design and delivery of external work on a range of projects at HLM.

Mark said: “It is an exciting time to join the team at HLM, especially as the Cardiff office enhances its landscape architecture offering. I have experience of working in multi-disciplinary design teams and this insight will benefit the service we provide in the Cardiff office.”

Ms Taylor also joins HLM from Cardiff City Council with nine years’ experience in landscape architecture, managing landscape schemes, educational environments and whole park developments in both the private and public sectors. Ms Taylor also represents the Wales branch of the Landscape Institute on Council in London. In her role at HLM, she will be responsible for the design and delivery of phase 2 of the Penarth Learning Community, while also providing support to HLM’s Belfast office on two landscape projects in Dublin.

Ms Taylor said: “This is a great opportunity to further my career as a landscape architect by joining the team at HLM in Cardiff. HLM is a knowledgeable practice with a wealth of experience, and I hope that I will strengthen the team with my consultation expertise acquired across a variety of projects.”
