NMC secures flagship road improvement scheme

The Highways & Utilities division of leading civil engineering and building specialists North Midland Construction plc (NMC) has secured a £4.8m construction scheme to make major road improvements on a key gateway into Blackburn town centre.

NMC were appointed by Capita who are the consulting engineers on the scheme for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. The project is being implemented to improve accessibility to Blackburn town centre and enable future regeneration projects.

NMC will be widening a 700m section of road between Copy Nook and Furthergate to provide public transport priority into and out of Blackburn town centre, and constructing a 1.1km link road between Burnley Close and the Red Lion roundabout. NMC will be employing a local supply chain to deliver specialist works as required.

This scheme adds to a growing number of highways projects NMC is undertaking across the UK after being awarded projects in Peterborough, Burnley, Bradford, Wigan, Liverpool, Birmingham, Newark and Sheffield earlier this year.

Geoff Poyzer, Director of Highways & Utilities at NMC said, “This is a flagship scheme for our Highways & Utilities Division that we’re delighted to have been awarded. We have a strong history of working on complex schemes of this nature, and in particular in maintaining traffic flows throughout construction to minimise disruption to local road users. We look forward to implementing such an important project that will improve access to the town for the people of Blackburn and the surrounding area.”

Work is due to begin August 2014 and construction will take 44 weeks to complete.
