Avison Young appointed on Nottingham’s Government Hub Scheme

Avison Young’s Newcastle Building team, with support from Birmingham has been instructed by developers Sladen Estates and Peveril Securities to deliver the new Government Hub in Nottingham, acting as Project Manager, Employer’s Agent and Cost Consultant.

The development at Unity Square, Nottingham, will be home to HMRC’s 13th regional centre and is proceeding at pace, having commenced on the two-year build in March this year.

The 1.14-hectare site in Queensbridge Road – opposite Nottingham train station – will comprise two buildings totaling 677,605 sq. ft. (62,022 sq. m) of office space. HMRC has entered into a 25-year lease on Phase 1, which is being forward funded by Legal & General (L&G), accommodating around 4,000 of HMRC’s full-time equivalent employees.

The work is being undertaken by Bowmer + Kirkland. 5Plus Architects’ Manchester office is leading the design team, which includes BWB Consulting Engineers, Couch Perry Wilkes (M&E) and WYG.

Unity Square is seen as a crucial area of redevelopment with huge potential and is a cornerstone of Nottingham City Council’s vision for the city’s Southside.

Nicole Newbury, HMRC’s Senior Sponsor for the Nottingham Regional Centre said:
“HMRC is building on its longstanding presence in Nottingham and the Unity Square development will enable over 4000 colleagues to enjoy the benefits of a modern, digitally-advanced and collaborative workplace. This new office will help us to create a tax authority fit for the future.”

Nick Sladen, chief executive of Sladen Estates said: “This is the most transformational scheme to happen in the East Midlands in more than a decade. The city is undergoing significant regeneration and Unity Square is a cornerstone of this work. We’re on schedule to complete by summer 2021 and we look forward to seeing the development in use, creating a new business community for Nottingham.”

Gordon Hewling, Principal and Managing Director, Avison Young, Newcastle comments: ”This is the type and scale of scheme which we are increasingly becoming involved in delivering on a nationwide basis. The Avison Young Building team is delivering numerous schemes with a construction value in excess of £70m. Each project presents its own challenges. At Nottingham, the scheme went from the deal being done, into planning, through detailed design and starting on site inside six months. It is testament to all parties that the team was able to deliver to such a timescale.”
