Newport Unlimited present city regeneration plans to local businesses

Presenting to over 60 local businesses attending The Dragons of Newport Business Networking event at Rodney Parade last week, Hamish Munro,  Head of Regeneration at Newport Unlimited advised the delegates that  “Newport is making great progress ” as he explained  the priorities in the  Newport 2020 masterplan for the city.

Mr Munro said that, “The plan will create employment opportunities, promote inward investment and generate a new culture and character for Newport that will underpin future development and prosperity, creating a vibrant and self-sustaining city.”

He expressed that Debenhams’ decision to take a new store in the city centre showed that big retailers have confidence in Newport as a place to do business. He also added that the recent and ongoing developments in the city centre, including Admiral Insurance’s decision to relocate up to 1200 staff to new offices, would increase footfall and benefit existing traders.

When asked about the impact of the global recession on Newport Unlimited’s plans during the questions and answers section of his presentation, Mr Munro said, “Despite the tough economic climate, we are confident that the redevelopment plans will continue.”

He said: “Our aim, along with Newport City Council, is to ensure that businesses, residents and visitors benefit from the extensive regeneration opportunities, services and retail outlets a modern city should provide.”

This is the second of a planned series of guest speaker events organised by The Dragons of Newport Business Club.

John Newell, director of Kingston Newell Estate Agents in Newport and current chair of The Dragons was pleased with the number of attendees at this morning’s event and the level of interest shown in the presentation made by Newport Unlimited. He said, “Whilst we all have to accept that the economy isn’t as healthy as it was four or five years ago, organisations such as the council and Newport Unlimited are rightly working hard to promote the city as a viable business location.

He continues, “During our weekly Dragons breakfast meetings, our members are positive and reporting steady growth. Local businesses can succeed in this economic climate and working together as we do in The Dragons provide mutual benefits for all.”
