Slough’s leisure regeneration continues with £12.2million project completions

The regeneration of leisure facilities across the borough of Slough continues with the completion of the £6.5 million Langley Leisure Centre and the £5.7m Salt Hill Activity Centre projects.

Delivered by construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall, both buildings are the latest transformative municipal projects developed by Slough Urban Renewal (SUR), a joint venture between Morgan Sindall Investments Limited and Slough Borough Council, which was set up to drive regeneration in the town.

Langley Leisure Centre’s renovation has revitalised and extended its outdated facilities with upgrades to the swimming pools and reception area as well as a new fitness suite, new exercise and spinning studios plus a café and vending area in the new reception area.

The centre officially opened to the public on Saturday 7 July 2018.

The former ten pin bowling facility situated in Salt Hill Park has been transformed into a multi-functional family activity hub with a new six-lane ten pin bowling alley with its own bar, and new leisure zones featuring a high rope course, trampoline park, caving area, soft play and party rooms.

A new car park was also installed at the site providing an extra 48 spaces for visitors, who can now visit the facility, which opened on Tuesday 12 June 2018.

The completions come one month after the official opening of Slough Ice Arena, which was refurbished and extended by Morgan Sindall in a £10 million project.

Works included a two-storey canopy extension, new entrance, reception, café, gym and climbing facilities to revitalise the popular community facility, which remains the home of the Slough Jets ice hockey team.

In 2017, Morgan Sindall also delivered the £12.3 million Arbour Park Community Sports Stadium, which was the first leisure facility that the company worked on in Slough.

Work continues on the £18 million leisure centre on the Farnham Road, which is due to open to the public in March 2019.

The projects form part of Slough Borough Council’s investment of more than £62 million to regenerate leisure facilities across the borough ensuring that they will serve the Slough community for the next 25 years and help more people get more active, more often.

James York, Morgan Sindall’s area director in Slough, said: “The provision of high-quality sports and leisure facilities is an essential part of ensuring that local people can exercise regularly and improve their health and wellbeing.

“Our unique public-private partnership with Slough Borough Council continues to deliver outstanding projects for the community at a rate that is unprecedented across the UK and we look forward to continuing this work.”

Andy Howell, SUR general manager said: “We are delighted to have enabled the delivery of three fantastic leisure facilities for the people of Slough so far this year. The range of sport and fitness activities is great and it offers fabulous fun for families to get active more often.”

Councillor Rob Anderson, lead member for environment and leisure said: “It’s been a spectacular year so far for leisure and sports-led regeneration in Slough. We’ve seen the reopening of the transformed Ice Arena, the Salt Hill Activity Centre is proving a huge hit and now Langley Leisure Centre is full with keen swimmers and gym users. Our ambitious plans to make Slough one of the most active towns in the UK are firmly on track.”
