intu appoints contractor for intu Trafford Centre scheme

intu has appointed VINCI Construction UK Limited to deliver the £75 million transformation of intu Trafford Centre’s Barton Square.

The space is set to gain a new glass-domed roof and a fully redesigned interior under intu’s plans to expand and refresh that area of the centre, with work due to start later this year.

A number of new brands will join be joining intu Trafford Centre’s popular retail and leisure mix for the first time once the project completes early in 2020, with Primark signed up as an anchor tenant. Other brands already in place there include SEA LIFE Manchester, LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre and Next Home.

Colin Flinn, regional managing director at intu, said: “There’s nowhere else quite like intu Trafford Centre and we’re now investing £75 million to deliver a new space with a real ‘wow factor’ that will bring more brands and unique experiences to make our shoppers smile.

“Many of the things that make intu Trafford Centre so special will be extended into the Barton Square area of centre, allowing us to attract quality new brands and provide even more for people to shop, eat, play and do. We’re bringing a Primark store to intu Trafford Centre and will be announcing a number of other new retail and leisure operators soon.”

Construction is already well underway on two more of intu’s retail and leisure destinations, with work due to complete on the major developments at intu Watford and intu Lakeside in the next year. A 400,000 sq ft extension to intu Watford will open in the autumn and intu Lakeside’s £72 million development for incoming leisure brands like Nickelodeon, Hollywood Bowl and new mini-golf operator Puttshack is launching next year.
