Cushman & Wakefield appointed to review development options for Leatherhead’s Swan Shopping Centre

Cushman & Wakefield has been appointed by Mole Valley District Council to review development options for the Swan Shopping Centre in Leatherhead, following a competitive tender process.

Mole Valley has identified the need to build upon Leatherhead town centre’s retail and leisure offer as part of its Transform Leatherhead Masterplan initiatives. It has already purchased the Swan Shopping Centre, which opened in the early 1980s, and adjacent high street units in keeping with many local authorities investing in town centre renewal.

Cushman & Wakefield’s review will analyse options for the Swan Shopping Centre ranging from small scale modifications through to wholescale redevelopment. The process, in partnership with architects Child Graddon Lewis and structural engineer Conisbee, will result in a recommended Masterplan for the centre.

Cushman & Wakefield’s Retail Development & Place team, led by John Percy, has played a leading role in successful regeneration and development schemes across the country. The firm is strategic property advisor to Derby City Council on its City Centre Masterplan, is advising Newcastle City Council on its Northumberland Street Area Transformation Project, and was instrumental in the delivery of Grand Central Birmingham on behalf of Birmingham City Council.

Councillor Simon Edge, Mole Valley District Council’s Cabinet Member for Prosperity, commented: “We have identified the potential to develop the Swan Shopping Centre in Leatherhead to create a dynamic new retail and leisure destination. Cushman & Wakefield’s expertise, with a proven track-record in shopping centre regeneration, will help to deliver a sustainable mix of uses for Leatherhead’s retail and leisure quarter that builds on the community feedback received as part of the Transform Leatherhead Masterplan.”

John Percy, Head of Retail Development & Place at Cushman & Wakefield, commented: “How residents and visitors interact with town centres continues to evolve. In those that are thriving, a compelling retail and leisure offer plays a central role, acting as a focal point for the wider community and a destination in their own right.

“We are delighted that Mole Valley District Council have asked us to support them in this exciting next chapter in the area’s regeneration. We are looking forward to working with the council on the transformation of the Swan Shopping Centre, which will act as a catalyst for the entire high street.”
