Barker Storey Matthews help safeguard Blacks’ presence in Peterborough

Barker Storey Matthews Peterborough office has assisted Blacks Outdoor in retaining a presence in Peterborough City Centre.

The retailer had until recently been located on Long Causeway, just off Cathedral Square. In April of this year however, Blacks had to vacate their premises as the landlord refused to grant them a new lease on the grounds that they wanted to merge the unit with an adjacent premises in order to form a new restaurant unit – currently being fitted out by Wagamama’s.

Blacks had been searching for viable new premises for some time without success, and it looked possible that they would have to abandon Peterborough as a trading location which would have been a great loss to the City.

Julian Welch, Director at Barker Storey Matthews commented “Blacks originally approached us to enquire about premises at 19-21 Bridge Street, but unfortunately we had already let that unit to Kaspas. They were running out of time to find a new unit, however we were aware that 50 Bridge Street was to become available after we had assisted Yours Clothing in relocating to a larger two storey unit close to Cathedral Square.”

He added “we were able to approach the owners and agree a new lease with Blacks very quickly, with the outgoing tenant happy to be released from their current agreement which was due to expire in September. It was important for Blacks to acquire something quickly them since they were concerned about losing customer base if they were closed for too long, and they had to vacate their old unit at the beginning of April.”

The fact that Blacks, a well-known national retailer, had struggled to identify new premises in the City is another clear sign of the relatively buoyant demand for retail premises in the City Centre and continues to identify Peterborough as a sought after location for many operators”.
