Future Solent creates Greentech South ‘innovation network’

Turning the South’s green technology research into viable market solutions is the focus of a new ‘technology and innovation network’ being launched by the Future Solent partnership.

Greentech South is designed to strengthen links between the region’s world-class environmental researchers and those in the business community building green products and services.

The network will help to deliver growth in the low carbon and green technology sectors, one of Future Solent’s key priorities.

Stewart Dunn, Chair of Future Solent, said: “The creation of Greentech South provides a vital part of our plan to deliver a low carbon economy and support innovative businesses as they create long-term sustainable economic growth in our region.”

Launched in 2012, Future Solent has coordinated grant funding allowing 14 companies to receive more than £1.1m to allow them to develop low carbon innovations and efficiencies.

Partnership work has contributed to the creation of over 130 jobs in the region and helped attract £5.3m in private investment.

One of the first businesses to benefit from a Future Solent grant is Sustainable Marine Energy based at Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The marine engineering specialist works on technological solutions for the tidal energy industry.

Jason Hayman, Managing Director, said: “This region has enormous potential to contribute to the low carbon economy. With the right support the area can become an industry hub. Greentech South’s work will go some way towards helping to create more investment in innovative businesses and create more jobs and prosperity for the region.”

A major strength of Greentech South will be the ability to bring together a quality network of low carbon businesses and academic experts, and link them with other sources of help and support as they strive to develop a low carbon economy. This network will provide an arena and catalyst for cooperation as businesses seek to develop new products to market.

Jan Ward CBE, Solent LEP Board Member and CEO of Corrotherm, said: “This is an exciting time for all those involved in wanting to support innovative businesses in the greentech sector. Greentech South will help secure economic growth and enable our region to become known as a national leader in sustainability.”
