2014 ends on a high for North Somerset’s new business start-ups

The final quarter of 2014 saw 33 new businesses start-up in North Somerset with the assistance of North Somerset Enterprise Agency (NSEA), creating 37 new jobs.

Of these, 10 new businesses started in December bringing 12 new jobs to the area.  This is more than treble the same time a year ago, when 3 new businesses started up, with 3 new jobs created.

However of those three companies that started in December 2013, all are still successfully trading. Looking back over three years – the acknowledged point by which most businesses fail according to statistics – the 100 per cent success rate continues, with all 5 out of 5 businesses who started out in December 2011 and sought business advice and support, also still successfully trading.

Latest businesses in the area include an adventure activities business, a CCTV service provider, a mobile beauty therapist and a hypnotherapist.

Angela Hicks, Chief Executive of North Somerset Enterprise Agency, which exists to support start-up and small businesses with free or low-cost advice, support, training and information, says that the latest figures are good news for North Somerset.

“Thirty-seven new jobs created in our area in the last quarter or 2014 is fantastic.  However when you consider that all of the new businesses we are helping are getting business support with a view to helping them succeed long term and grow, this is also great news for our economy and employment for the future.

“Starting out in business is never an easy decision – it takes courage, determination and sheer hard work to make a business succeed.  So we are also delighted for the businesses we have helped who have just celebrated their first year and three year anniversaries – these are huge milestones and it is so rewarding to see.” Angela continues.

“We would urge anyone who is thinking that 2015 may be their year to start a business to get in touch and find out what we can offer.  Our local, experienced, knowledgeable team of advisors are here to help and in many cases advice or training is free.  We’d love to help more start-ups of this year celebrate their anniversaries further down the line!”.

North Somerset Enterprise Agency, based at The Hive business development centre in the Weston Business Quarter of the J21 Enterprise Area, is a not-for-profit organisation with social objectives.  Established 28 years ago, it helps thousands of businesses to start up and grow every year.
