New HQ will enable Mackworth Healthcare to continue to expand

Mackworth Healthcare’s new headquarters and manufacturing facility were officially opened by Economy Minister Edwina Hart yesterday (Wednesday April 9) and will enable the company to continue its substantial growth programme.

The Bridgend based business, which specialises in designing and manufacturing a range of slings and hoists for moving and handling patients, has seen profitable turnover increase in excess of 550%, since its acquisition eighteen months ago. During the same period staff numbers have increased from seven to 32.

The move to larger, purpose-designed premises on the Brynmenyn Industrial Estate has been supported by the Welsh Government with £114,000 business finance and will secure the company’s long term sustainable future in Wales and safeguard jobs.

The Minister described the move as a significant landmark in the company’s history and said: “It is fantastic to see an indigenous company growing so quickly; reaching global markets; and creating new and sustainable employment – which is excellent news for Wales.

“Growth and sustainable jobs are at the heart of the Welsh Government’s Programme for Government, and Mackworth is a shining example of this, with substantial growth over the last 18 months.

“I am particularly pleased we have been able to support the company’s expansion through funding for research and development, assistance with international trade developments and most recently, their move into new premises.

“Their new headquarters will give Mackworth sufficient space for further growth over the next 10 years and beyond – securing the long term future of the company.”

Managing Director Neil Smith, who alongside fellow Director Lee Reeves, acquired the company in November 2012 have overseen the transition of the business into a dynamic, high growth commercial operation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony Neil told guests: “These are exciting times for Mackworth Healthcare. We have invested heavily in the business, developed and launched new products, most of which are made solely in Wales, whilst continuing to expand. These new premises will provide the manufacturing capacity needed to meet the growing demand for our products from the UK and overseas for a long time to come.

“I would like to thank the Welsh Government and Bridgend County Council for its support which has been invaluable and has certainly played a significant role in our impressive growth in terms of turnover, job creation and exports.”

The company’s new premises include a purpose built showroom, state of the art manufacturing centre, warehousing, offices and staff recreational facilities.
