Game for a laugh: business leaders get a drenching in the name of charity

They’re normally immaculately dressed in sharp suits and looking the picture of professionalism. But on Monday directors and partners from Grant Thornton UK LLP in Southampton sported a whole new look as they took a sponging for charity.

Staff and clients of the leading business and financial advisory firm have been voting for the person they most wanted to throw wet sponges at over the last few weeks and, on Monday, those with the most and the least votes received a soaking.

The event was run to raise money for BBC’s Children in Need Appeal and so far over £600 has been raised. Organiser, Jane Hallet, said: “In the past we’ve done the traditional cake sales and sponsored runs but we wanted to do something a bit different this year that would get everyone engaged.

“The partners and directors have been such good sports and I applaud them for their senses of humour, it’s supporting a very good cause.”

Those who got sponged on Monday were:
Stephen Mills – office managing partner
Norman Armstrong – partner
Kerry McKeown – director
James Stares – director
Nigel Le Bas – associate director

Grant Thornton regularly raises money for local and national charities as part of its corporate social responsibility programme. Among the causes it has helped in recent years are the Rowan’s Hospice, Cancer Research UK and Southampton charity Two Saints.
