Farmfoods gives Swansea vote of confidence

Leading frozen food specialists Farmfoods has given Swansea a big vote of confidence by committing to a new long term lease on its out-of-town store, Barberry Developments announced today.

Farmfoods, which has been located on the busy Lion Way retail park for 10 years, has agreed the new lease with landlords Barberry which will see the existing store extended from 5,500 sq ft to 8,250 sq ft.

It follows a similar deal with Poundstretcher in the 12,500 sq ft unit next door. The company agreed a new 15-year lease, said Henry Bellfield, director of Worcestershire-based Barberry Developments.

“To have two units totalling in excess of 20,000 sq ft occupied by major national retailers on long term leases demonstrates the strength and appeal of the Lion Way retail park and is a major vote of confidence in Swansea,” said Henry.

“It is a profitable location and, along with Phoenix retail park next door, it represents an attractive retail location with a good density of retailers and very good footfall. We have invested in both retail parks, improved car parking, and talked to our tenants to make sure we provide the best possible retailing environment.”

He added: “Farmfoods are a breath of fresh air to deal with and we are looking forward to working with them for the long term. They are a very professional and responsive team, you can see why the company is so successful.”

Farmfoods was established in 1955 and has around 300 stores across the UK.

A 3,335 sq ft retail unit adjoining Farmfoods is available at Lion Way. Fully fitted and ready for occupation, it is ideal for a complementary use to sit alongside high footfall retailers, added Henry.

Barberry, which acquired Lion Way retail park in 2008, has been working with tenants to considerably improve the layout and configuration of the car park, loading/storage provisions and landscaping areas. While the retail park has always been popular the improvements have further boosted trading activity. The area is already an established retail destination with nearby retailers including Tesco Extra, Home Bargains, Halfords and Greggs.
