Newport chosen as location for first private Specialist Neuro Physiotherapy Unit in Wales

Morrello Health have moved into a 900 sq. ft office suite in Nelson House, Langston Business Village, Newport.

The company headed by Clinical Expert Neuro Physiotherapist Jakko Brouwers is the first private Neurophysiotherapy unit in Wales providing highly specialist consultation and treatment programmes for patients who have had strokes, spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons Disease, Cerebral Palsy and other neurological conditions.

The suite in Nelson House has four treatment areas and Mr Brouwers will be working with a group of fellow expert physiotherapists providing specialist consultation and treatment for adults and possibly in future for children. It is also the only assessment in centre in Wales for Bioness hand treatment which uses Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) technology.

Mr Brouwers was previously the Head of Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy in the Welsh National Spinal Cord Injury and Neuro Rehabilitation Unit at Rookwood Hospital in Cardiff treating patients from across Wales.

Mr Brouwers said, “During my 10 years at Rookwood Hospital, I realised there was a requirement for a private clinic offering our specialist services. I have personally selected a team of physiotherapists who are experts in their chosen fields and invested in the appropriate state of the art equipment. Our aim is to provide a highly specialist environment in which our patients can continue the work they started during their rehabilitation in the NHS.”

Within a few weeks of moving into the new unit Morrello Health is already planning to extend its opening times to provide evening and weekend appointments due to the demand for their specialist services. Mr Bouwers is also in discussion with neurologists and other specialists regarding offering additional expert services.

Explaining his decision to choose Nelson House, Mr Bouwers explained, “I spent over a year looking for a suitable unit. Disabled parking facilities were essential as was easy access to the building and a location close to the motorway. We have patients who travel here from as far as Aberystwyth and Carmarthen as well as clients from the Newport and Cardiff area. The layout of the suite needed to be adaptable for the different treatment areas, various pieces of equipment we use and provide privacy for the patients. The suite in Nelson House has proved ideal.”

Dan Smith, director of M4 Property Consultants acted jointly with Parrys Commercial on behalf of Netvox Ltd, the owners of Nelson House, said, “We’re delighted to welcome Morrello Health to Nelson House. Following our advice to the landlord to split the building into smaller suites to match market demand, all of the suites are now fully let. Jakko and his team were very specific regarding their accommodation requirements and we were happy to work with them to make sure we could provide everything they required. We wish them all the best with their business venture. ”

On 26th and 27th July, Morrello Clinic as the unit is named, will hold an open day for interested people to have a look, a chat or a free specialist assessment with FES hand treatment, FES walking or FES cycling. Morrello Clinic will in July take delivery of the only commercially available RT300 FES cycle in Wales from Cyclone Mobility. This exercise cycle is designed for Spinal Cord Injury and other paralysed patients to be using their own muscles in a cycling exercise through electrical stimulation.
