University challenge for pupils

Talented students enjoyed a chance to meet the experts and talk about their career prospects at City College Southampton on Friday, May 3.

Pupils aged 13 and 14, from nine local secondary schools, engaged with business gurus, including solicitors, accountants and bankers, as well as career experts from Southampton General Hospital, Hampshire Police and the University of Southampton.

The ‘Meet the Experts’ event, held in The hub at City College, was organised as part of the Southampton Junior University project.

The Year Nine pupils have been have been identified by their schools as being ‘Gifted and Talented’ and each has a mentor from the University of Southampton and one from Southampton Solent University.

City College principal Lindsey Noble welcomed the students and thanked the experts for attending.

She said: “The college is pleased to see so many local experts ready and willing to give the best possible career advice to these young people.

“It is vital that we all lend our support to guide and support our students as they make important career choices. I hope this event will play a pivotal role in ensuring they receive all the relevant information to allow them to move forward in their chosen fields.”

The Junior University students have taken part in a number of in-school mentoring sessions where they have looked at skills such as independent study, research, and project management.

Since December, the students have been working on a career investigation project which will be displayed at the University of Southampton on May 22.
