Businesses urged to share their green credentials ahead of the European Green Capital bid 2015

As Bristol prepares to make its final bid for the European Green Capital award 2015, businesses and community groups are being urged to step into the limelight.

The bid team is gathering information from across Bristol on the exciting range of green initiatives and projects going on in the city so it can include them in the bid and showcase Bristol’s green credentials on a global stage.

Bristol has been shortlisted alongside Brussels, Glasgow and Ljubljana for the award, with the winner being announced on June 14 in Nantes, France.

Next month the Bristol Green Capital Partnership will present its case to a jury of experts in Brussels, but as part of the preparations they want to hear examples of inspiring work that highlight the city’s commitment to the environment.

Martin Bigg, Chair of the Bristol Green Capital Partnership, which is leading the bid preparation, said:

“Being in the final for the European Green Capital title in 2015 is fantastic news for Bristol and a reflection of the commitment in the city to a sustainable green future.

“Now we need to hear from those out in the field about the work they are doing with renewable energy, low carbon programmes and green technology.

“If you are a community group who helps people to live within our natural resources or a business who is investing in local sustainable energy supplies, we want to hear from you.

“We want to show just how active Bristol is as an environmental role model and a leader in low carbon living.”

The European Green Capital Award is given to a city which can act as a role model to inspire other cities and share best practices. This is the second successive year that Bristol has been shortlisted for the award.

The decision to shortlist Bristol as one of the four finalists has been welcomed by Bristol Mayor George Ferguson.

He said: “This is tremendous news. To win this time we all need to rally round, and I urge people to visit the Bristol Green Capital website and back the bid.”

Bristol citizens and businesses are able to show their support for the Bristol Bid through the ‘back the bid’ page of the Green Capital Partnership: http://bristolgreencapital.org/back-the-bid.php
