Early contractor involvement is key to sustainable construction

Britannia Construction is taking part in the first Environmental Trade Show UK (ETS UK) in Bristol. Taking place on 13 October at the UWE Exhibition and Conference Centre, the trade show brings together the best in Environmental and Low Carbon goods and services.

Britannia, based in Cheltenham, is sponsoring the Sustainable Construction Zone at ETS UK, and will be taking the opportunity to showcase its experience and commitment within the industry.

Kevin Harris, innovation and sustainability manager for Britannia, says, “There are so many diverse elements to sustainable construction, which are not only good for the environment, but make sound commercial sense too. As an example the construction industry is responsible for some 120 million tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation waste every year – that’s around one third of all waste in the UK.  Waste costs money, so at Britannia we are committed to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill each year.”

As well as ways to reduce waste to landfill, at ETS UK Britannia will be showcasing issues such as water and energy useage, materials sourcing and reclamation; environmental management and conservation within construction; and community engagement.

Kevin continues, “We believe the key to sustainable construction is early contractor involvement. Getting involved early in the process brings a whole new perspective to the job gained from our previous experiences particularly with responsibly sourced low carbon materials and associated installation practices, build programmes and engagement with sub-contractors as well as local stakeholders.”
