Cain bolsters European real estate equity team with two senior hires

Cain International, the privately held investment firm operating in the United States and Europe, has appointed John Spillane and Robert van Vliet to bolster its European real estate equity team.

With more than a decade’s experience in private equity real estate and asset management in London and the US, Spillane joins from Orion Capital Managers and will be Vice President for Portfolio Management at Cain. Prior to his former role at Orion Capital Managers, John worked for Rockspring Property Investment Managers and at a CMBS loan servicer in the US.

Van Vliet joins Cain from Hammerson, where he was responsible for the asset management of prime shopping destinations including Brent Cross in London and Dundrum Town Centre in Dublin, and developed significant experience in developing value-add projects and delivering sustainability initiatives.

At Cain, John will be working across the entirety of Cain’s European investment portfolios and strategies, while Robert will focus on the firm’s U.K. development assets including Islington Square and The Stage.

These latest appointments follow a strong period of growth for Cain’s real estate equity team, which has increased its headcount by 50 percent in the last year. The team has recently launched two new strategies including a £1 billion logistics portfolio acquired from Firethorn Trust, and a joint venture with Fusion Students to build a portfolio worth £1.5 billion in purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA).

Richard Pilkington, Senior Managing Director and Head of European Real Estate at Cain International, said: “Having expanded our footprint with two major new investment strategies in logistics and PBSA, it is an immensely exciting time for Cain and both John and Robert bring impressive track records in asset management and investment. We very much look forward to benefiting from their expertise as we continue to build on our success to date in Europe and the UK.”
