The Tour de Vale – First WOODEN SPOON ‘Valeride’ a Huge Success.

An ‘Indian Summer’ Autumnal Sunday morning – imagine how beautiful Cow bridge looked at 9am with the sun glistening on the dewy hedgerows … the reflectors of 81 bicycles as they sped … err … ‘made their way’ around the roads and lanes. These were the intrepid trailblazers who took part in the first ‘Valeride’ organised by Wooden Spoon Wales, a 44 mile charity cycle ride round the Vale of Glamorgan.

The day was all about fun and showing support for the Rugby charity, to raise money for physically, mentally & socially disadvantaged children in Wales. Cowbridge RFC kindly hosted the event & the start & afterwards the bar was well patronised by all the ‘athletes’ at the finish.

As the riders jockeyed for position to get a flying start and excitement built, there was only one person who could control the tense situation – former international referee and Wooden Spoon committee member, Clive Norling. The riders were sent on their way with a loud blast of his whistle – but no red cards!

The event attracted entries from families, work mates, rugby teams etc. & some ‘serious riders’ toning up for the Captains Ride in California. Everyone kindly contributed to the cause but significant donations included Cowbridge RFC, HLN Architects, Travelodge, Morgan Cole, Legal Services for Children, ATS,

Archenfield Insurance, UWHA & Asbri Planning .The amount raised is over £4000 & this money will be used to develop facilities for special needs children here in Wales.

The success of this first ‘Valeride’ ensures it will become an annual event. So thanks to all who participated & we look forward to seeing you next year & wear your shirt with pride!!
