G F Tomlinson at the double with awards success

Contractor G F Tomlinson is celebrating after scooping two prestigious construction industry awards.

G F Tomlinson has won New Build of the Year for the new Tibshelf Communiity School and Refurbishment of the Year for Chesterfield Market Place at the NFB (National Federation of Builders) Annual Awards, 2014.

Andy Sewards, director at G F Tomlinson, said: “We’re thrilled to have won these two prestigious industry awards which are testament to a lot of hard work from our team here at G F Tomlinson.

“Both Tibshelf School and Chesterfield Market Place are projects which are tremendous assets for local communities in Derbyshire.  Both schemes have been very successful and we’re delighted this has been recognised with these awards,” Andy added.

The new state-of-the-art £15 million Tibshelf Community School in Tibshelf, Derbyshire has been designed and constructed to accommodate more than 750 students from the local community.  The work was carried out for local G F Tomlinson’s client, Derbyshire County Council.

The school has been constructed with five interlinked buildings containing specialist and general teaching areas, offices, sports hall, library, drama facilities, dining area and offices.

There is also a new, standalone autism unit including teaching and sensory rooms.

Externally, facilities include an artificial turf pitch, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), sports fields, car parking and bus bays.

To ensure the building is as environmentally friendly as possible, several special features have been incorporated including a high energy efficient boiler and heat pump units providing heating or cooling in high demand areas.

Work at Chesterfield Market Hall involved redeveloping the iconic building to restore it to its former glory.  The £3.6 million scheme at the Grade II listed building was delivered for local G F Tomlinson client, Chesterfield Borough Council.

The market hall is an historic building which is of huge significance to the local community, dating back to 1857.  G F Tomlinson’s work saw the building updated to bring it in line with the times while also maintaining its Grade Two features.

Both of the awards received by G F Tomlinson were in the C category for companies with a turnover of above £5.5 million.

New Build of the Year was awarded for a project that demonstrates design impact, enhancement of the community, value for money, energy efficiency or other such benefit to the community and to business.

Refurbishment of the Year was awarded for innovation and creativity in improving a building or estate.  Award winners were able to demonstrate examples of collaborative working, ambitious makeovers, evidence of the adoption of new trends and working methods to create originality, or economic savings through new ways of working.

The winners were announced at a gala lunch hosted by TV presenter and consumer affairs specialist, Dominic Littlewood.
