Top of the class

Leading Bridgend-based construction company, Jehu Project Services is continuing to strengthen its position within the education sector after winning a contract for the refurbishment and extension of St John’s College in Old St Mellons.

The family-run business has recently completed work at Pennar School in Pembroke Dock and Beechwood College in the Vale of Glamorgan, and is currently carrying out a similar refurbishment and extension project for Glyncoed School in Pentwyn, Cardiff.

St John’s College is Wales’ leading independent day school for children aged 3 to 18. The extension will house two classrooms and a new library facility. The contract was won on competitive tender and work will be carried out in two separate phases. The first phase will consist of the new build and is estimated to take 28 weeks, with work finishing in April. The school will be fully operational throughout this time. This will be followed by the refurbishment phase which will take place during the summer holidays so as to cause minimum disruption to pupils’ education.

Project manager Daimon Pengelly will be working with Graham David, architect and contract administrator from Boyes Rees, on the project.

Daimon said: “Having completed several projects within the education sector during the past year, we are well practised in ensuring that the safety of pupils remains our top priority throughout. Pupil movement in and around site will be carefully organised to avoid any potential dangers, and deliveries will be planned to arrive between the beginning and end of the school day to avoid clashes with parents dropping off or collecting children.”

Dr David Neville, Head of St John’s College, added: “St John’s College already has an enviable reputation, and has been the highest performing A Level College in Wales every year since 2000. These new facilities will enhance the already exceptional quality of education we offer our pupils. The new building will provide specialist teaching accommodation and an innovative library space which we believe will inspire pupils. The project also rationalises the existing teaching facilities to increase accessibility for disabled pupils. We know that Jehu Project Services have an excellent reputation within the education sector.”

Jehu Project Services works on projects across a range of sectors including retail, leisure, housing and manufacturing. With its headquarters in Bridgend it contributes majorly to the Jehu Group turnover which now exceeds £40 million.
