Clarke’s Clocks in for another five years

An office equipment and furniture supplier has been hailed the longest trading tenant at the Evelyn Street industrial estate in Beeston, thanks to NG Chartered Surveyors securing a new commercial lease on its 5,000 sq ft unit.

Clarkes of Nottingham, established in 1982, supplies office equipment and furniture to customers from all over the UK.

The firm has signed a lease renewal for another five years on the industrial estate, following 30 years in business, 20 years of which have been in Evelyn Street industrial estate.

Sunny Landa, from NG, said: “Many SMEs are finding the current economy challenging so every little helps when negotiating on rent renewals. It’s our job to understand what help a tenant needs in their negotiations, as well as appreciating what limits landlords can work within.

“A competitive negotiation on the renewal of the lease has resulted in a deal that suited both the landlord and Clarkes, enabling their continued occupation on site. This is also great news for the local economy.”

Roger Clarke believes the secret of his success is down to the hard work of his experienced team, and offering customers consistent for value for money.

He said: “In the twenty years that we have been on the estate I’ve seen every unit change hands with businesses coming and going. Being the longest standing tenant is quite an accolade.

“My business has gone from strength to strength. We sell a range of things from new and used office furniture to stationery, cleaning products and IT consumables. So everything you’d need to set up and maintain an office.

“We have succeeded where others have failed by identifying opportunities and working hard to fill a gap in the market. I’ve noticed that more businesses are approaching us for used office furniture because they are trying to get more for every pound spent and can’t or won’t spend money on brand new stuff. It’s about up-recycling, we also offer to remove old furniture for disposal when selling clients replacement products. It’s a win-win formula for everyone.

“We source used furniture, refurbish where appropriate and distribute it all over the UK from our warehouse and storage units in Nottingham.

“Sunny was introduced to me and negotiated a competitive deal for us to keep the lease for another five years. Evelyn Street is an ideal location for the business because we can deliver to customers in the city and the East Midlands using our own vans, and we use couriers for deliveries in Scotland, Wales the South West and London clients.”

Sean Bremner, director at Lambert Smith Hampton said, “We are delighted that Clarkes of Nottingham have committed to Evelyn Street.  In representing any landlord, tenant retention is vitally important and we are pleased with the deal we agreed.  We wish Clarkes of Nottingham future success from this location.”

Sunny Landa acted on behalf of the tenant, and Sean Bremner of Lambert Smith Hampton acted for the landlord.  The tenant’s legal documentation was managed by Stuart Burns of Howes Percival in Leicester.
