Agents convince council to rethink future of former Alcan site

Regeneration experts from Colliers International have helped Linden Homes Western secure planning permission to re-develop the former Alcan site in Midsomer Norton.

Bath and North East Somerset Council granted planning permission for an ambitious mixed use scheme at the site including 176 new homes, community facilities, offices, town centre link, a formal green space and associated works.

Colliers International development director Christopher Dawson was called in to advise the Linden Homes regeneration team on   local market demand for business premises on the site.

He said: “Although the Local Plan carries a presumption in favour of continued business use at the site we were able to demonstrate that alternative job creation could be facilitated by a combination  of live work units and  offices   plus a developer contribution to bringing forward better located off-site employment opportunities in the area.

“Given the inherent constraints of the former Alcan site as a modern business location we argued it was unlikely to be a realistic site for current and future business
space needs.

“The consultancy package successfully addressed BANES’ initial concerns about the loss of employment space on the former factory site.”
