Telecoms firm dials up support for Gwent hospice charity

On call: Andrew Nicholson, of TWL, opens The Haven with Emma Saysell and Adrian Hadley, of St David’s Hospice Care.

Leading telecoms firm TWL has connected with St David’s Hospice Care to sponsor the therapy room at the charity’s £5m in patient hospice.

Cardiff-based TWL is sponsoring The Haven room for complementary therapy at the hospice which admitted its first patients last month.

TWL Managing Director, Andrew Nicholson, was given a guided tour of the hospice by St David’s Hospice Care Chief Executive, Emma Saysell and deputy chief executive, Adrian Hadley.

Mr Nicholson said: “I had a tour of the facility recently and I was utterly blown away by the quality and attention to detail that has gone into making it a development to be proud of.

“We have a long-standing relationship with St David’s Hospice Care that is built on trust and respect. Year-on-year we fundraise for the organisation because we know the lengths they go to in order to support patients and families going through difficult times.”

Mr Nicholson said: “A large motivator behind our support is being able to see first-hand where the money is spent. It is clear that the charity invests so much into ensuring its facilities, as well as its people, are world-class. The quality and level of care is something that our country should be proud of.

“Having seen the room, I am certain that The Haven will go some way in supporting those battling illness as well as providing comfort for family members and loved ones.”

Adrian Hadley said: “TWL have become established supporters of St David’s Hospice Care over recent years taking part in a number of our fund raising events. We very much welcome this extra support in sponsoring The Haven at the new in patient hospice at Malpas, Newport.”

Emma Saysell said: “We are so grateful to sponsors such as TWL and also the Welsh Government which is funding the building to the tune of £3m, Newport City Council, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and the Big Lottery for recognising and investing in our shared vision here in Newport.”

The ultra modern facility is being run St David’s Hospice Care, working in partnership with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and Newport City Council.

St David’s Hospice Care cares for more than 3,000 patients and their families every year free of charge. Staff operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, caring for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses such as end-stage heart failure and motor neurone disease.

St David’s Hospice Care serves a population of more than 600,000 people from Newport, Caerphilly, Torfaen, Monmouthshire, as well as Mid and South Powys.

The new in patient centre is linked to the current day hospice by a corridor, will be officially opened later in the year. The new in patient unit replaces the existing 10-bedded unit at St Anne’s, Malpas, Newport.
Each patients’ room in the new building leads onto a terraced area which overlooks a garden to be used by patients and visitors with far reaching views to Twm Barlwm. The new facility will also benefit from a social hub, a multi faith room and community café, served by a 50 space car park.

TWL installed a hosted system with 80 handsets into St David’s new offices.
