World’s most expensive Welsh cake goes on display

Welsh gold, sparkling diamonds and glittering cubic zirconia aren’t things you would normally associate with the humble Welsh cake, but these luxuries have all been chosen to decorate one particularly extravagant treat going on display in Cardiff this week.

This lavish little Welsh cake has been decorated with cubic zirconia and topped with a pure Welsh gold and diamond ring worth £6,250.

Welsh diamond specialist Clive Ranger has teamed up with new start-up Mary Margaret Mix to bake the cake, which will be given away to a lucky winner on St David’s Day.

To be in with a chance of winning the dazzling prize, people are invited to come along to the store on the corner of High Street and Castle Arcade on 1st March to pick up a raffle ticket in exchange for a suggested £2 donation to charity. As well as a chance to win, they will receive a regular but equally delicious Welsh cake with all donations going to Marie Curie Cancer Care.

All entrants will then be invited back to an in-store drinks reception in the evening, with the winner being drawn at 5.45pm.

Richard Slack, managing director of Clive Ranger, said: “We wanted to do something special for St David’s Day and so decided to put our own unique twist on this tasty traditional food. This beautiful solitaire ring is set with a .71 carat certificated diamond and made from pure 18ct Welsh gold taken from the Gwynfynydd Mine in Dolgellau and would make a stunning gift or engagement ring.

“We’ll be displaying the one-off Welsh cake in our window in the week running up to St David’s Day for people to come and take a look at what we believe to be a world first. We’re confident that the giveaway will be a great success and that we’ll be able to make a significant donation to Marie Curie Cancer Care.”

Local Marie Curie Community Fundraising Manager, Karen Jones said: “We’re delighted to be the beneficiary of this very unique celebration of St David’s Day.  All money raised will help Marie Curie Nurses care for people with terminal cancer and other illnesses at home or in the Marie Curie Hospice, Penarth.”

The winner must be present in store when the ticket is drawn at 5.45pm. Terms and conditions will be displayed at Clive Ranger in the week running up to the giveaway.
