HS2 will ‘free up capacity for freight’ according to DTZ

Simon Lloyd, Head of Industrial & Logistics at DTZ responds to news that High Speed Two (HS2) has been given the green light:

“The £17bn High Speed Two (HS2) investment will undoubtedly boost the regional economy and help businesses in Birmingham to reach new markets.

“Importantly, HS2 will also relieve capacity on the UK’s overcrowded existing rail network, meaning there will be greater opportunities to increase the amount of freight transferred from the road to the railways. This in turn, will ease road congestion and help to reduce carbon emissions, both of which will have consequent environmental as well as pricing benefits for consumers.

“Birmingham Airport will also benefit from its proposed station, making the airport a viable alternative for passengers in London.

“An additional benefit will be the direct link to Heathrow Airport and the Channel Tunnel proposed in phase 2 which will offer greater mobility between the South East, Midlands, North and Scotland.”
