Derby horticultural business blooming

A family-owned horticultural business is blooming after improving its premises in Derby.

Woodgrow Horticulture Limited – which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year – has moved into its new 100 sqm offices in Burton Road, Findern, after receiving help from its long-time advisers, Baldwins Accountants.

The business, which has been at its present site since 1990, provides a one-stop for the horticultural needs of landscapers, schools, colleges, local authorities, developers and civil engineers since it sells everything from shrubs and trees to topsoil, bark mulches and many other landscaping products.

Woodgrow Horticulture was set-up in 1973 – with John Baldwin being their first accountant – by Arnold Woodhouse as a distributor of bark mulches for use in landscaping.

Twenty-four years later, the company merged with the business of his son, Martin, which was Egginton Road Wholesale Nursery in nearby Etwall which grew trees and roses.

Martin, who now runs the company following his father’s retirement, said the site in Burton Road has slowly developed and they have swapped a temporary structure which was used as its office for a purpose-built building to also sell horticultural products.

He said: “The previous accommodation we had wasn’t suitable and we needed somewhere which better fitted our needs.

“We wanted to develop the business to stock garden machinery and tools for contractors and we are the local distributor for Maruyama which is new to the UK but is popular in the USA since it is the only commercial quality grounds maintenance machinery which carries a five-year engine warranty.

“We are really pleased with the quality of the new building and it gives better offices for our four full-time and two part-time staff as well as our sub-contractors during our busy seasons.

“Business is going very well and the support of Baldwins Accountants has been vital in our successful growth.”

Martin Hinrich, of Baldwins Accountants in Eldon Business Park, Eldon Road, Attenborough in Nottingham, said he had looked after Woodgrow Horticulture’s accounts for the last ten years.

“Woodgrow Horticulture provides, as the name suggests, the complete range of services connected with horticulture and they are constantly building their client base,” he said.

“The new structure provides a better welcome for its customers who are 75 per cent landscapers, local authorities and contractors.

“Martin and his team have vast knowledge in every area of horticulture and landscaping design and construction, and moving into the new premises signals their determination to develop the business further.”
