Wales’ national supercomputing network honoured at UK awards ceremony

The UK’s largest distributed supercomputing network has been recognised at a prestigious UK technology awards ceremony.

High Performance Computing (HPC) Wales, an EU-funded project helping businesses and universities access supercomputing technology, training and support was the only Welsh company to be shortlisted for an award at the ceremony.

The technology provider was honoured within the Open Data category of the Next Generation Digital Challenge Awards 2013.

The ceremony, hosted at Wembley last week, showcased the most innovative companies developing next generation digital access infrastructure across the UK.

HPC Wales was runner-up within the Open Data category, which featured heavy competition from national private sector companies such as the winners, eeGeo, and other shortlisted companies like REgenerate and Transfaction.

HPC Wales is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, and committed to boosting the Welsh economy by providing businesses and academic researchers with the most advanced computing technology in the world.

David Craddock, Chief Executive Officer at HPC Wales, said:
“We’re delighted to have been recognised at the Next Generation Digital Challenge Awards 2013.
“To be awarded as a runner up, when competing with some larger UK private sector organisations, is a great achievement for HPC Wales.
“We are committed to providing businesses with the fastest and most advanced forms of supercomputing technology to enhance their performance and this recognition demonstrates our success at doing so.”

Marit Hendriks, Director NG Events, said:

“The 2013 Next Generation Digital Challenge Awards have been a tremendous success for the enhancement of our understanding of the wider benefits of all things digital. This year we increased the number of categories by three to include Digital Skills, Digital Innovation and Open Data.

“It is fitting and pleasing to see that a company like HPC Wales achieved runner up status in the Open Data award. We applaud their innovative use of data and its empowerment to business and society”.
