Apprentice is the ‘magic number’ for city accountants’ EBS

The first Apprentice on the apprenticeship programme of Nottingham firm EBS Accountants is celebrating after the firm has extended his contract for a second year.

Joshua Scott joined EBS Accountants in August 2012 on a work experience contract, but a few weeks later he was offered the post of Apprentice when the firm launched its apprenticeship programme.

“EBS was looking at ways in which we could harness fresh talent whilst creating opportunities for Nottingham’s school leavers,” explains Jill Evenden, managing director and founder of the firm. “Taking the apprenticeship route has enabled us to fulfil our aim to play a part in investing in Nottingham’s future talent.

“Josh and the apprenticeship have worked so well that we have extended his contract and he will stay with the firm for a second year. Whilst exploring a viable career opportunity, the apprenticeship means Josh can also develop his work-based skills and knowledge alongside maintaining his studies and training one day each week at college.”

Josh, who lives in Arnold and went to Nottingham’s Redhill Academy, is shortly to complete the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Level 2 NVQ in Accounting at New College Nottingham (NCN) Clarendon, and will continue his studies with the AAT NVQ Level 3 in September.

“The role at EBS has been great,” says Josh, “and has given me the chance to gain experience alongside the firm’s accountants in a really wide range of accountancy services, from book keeping and tax preparation, to analysing accounts and general client service.

“I’ve even been given the chance to be involved in a full audit for a Nottingham-based professional services client alongside Jill and at the client’s office. This was definitely one of the highlights of the apprenticeship so far and something I would relish the opportunity to do again.”
