Shyam’s head for figures

One of the youngest university graduates in England has been hired by the South Coast office of accountancy and investment services group Smith & Williamson.

Shyam Patel, who graduated from Nottingham University with a BSc honours degree in maths and economics at the age of 20, a year earlier than average, is the latest tax trainee to be taken on at the firm’s corporate tax section in Southampton.

He has started a three-year training course which encompasses exams through ATT, and then CTA, a leading professional body for qualified taxation technicians who specialise in complying with UK tax obligations, compliance services and related activities.

Rebecca Combes, a partner at Smith & Williamson and head of tax at the Southampton office, providing tax services to businesses, said: “Shyam is a welcome addition to the team amid increasing demand from firms and individuals keen not to fall foul of the many tax regulations out there.”

Shyam, who lives in Southampton, said: “The work I’m doing is varied and interesting, and it is interesting to see first-hand the complexities involving tax. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions.”
