Cafe owner skydives for charity

A cafe owner at Cwmbran Shopping has completed an impressive 11,000ft skydive in aid of the Noah’s Ark Appeal.

Susan Reed, 51, from New Inn Pontypool, raised over £650 through sponsorship for the charity, which exclusively fundraises for the Children’s Hospital for Wales.

Ms Reed, who owns Sitting Pretty cafe on the upper level of The Parade, completed the skydive at Redlands Air Field Swindon on October 6 after being encouraged by a friend who works at the air field.

Ms Reed said: “The skydive was a terrifying but exhilarating experience. It was extremely nerve racking but knowing I was doing it for such a worthy charity definitely made it easier.”

Ms Reed added: “I chose the Noah Ark’s Appeal as I heard a campaign on the radio a few years ago where a teenager explained how difficult it was telling her friends that she was ill. The story broke my heart and it has always stayed with me. It’s such a fantastic charity which really makes a difference to people’s lives. I’m glad I was able to help in a small way.

“I was delighted by the support I received. The majority of donations came from my loyal customers. It’s a testament to the community in Cwmbran that they were all so willing to donate and support.”

In order to complete the challenge, Ms Reed undertook a day of ground level training at the Air Field where she had to learn the basic principles and positions of skydiving.

Ms Reed enjoyed the experience so much that she now plans to make skydiving her hobby and become a licensed skydiver in the future.

Gerry Hutchings, Centre Manager at Cwmbran Shopping, said: “We are extremely pleased for Sue as this was a daring challenge. She is an important part of our community at Cwmbran Shopping which is why so many people wanted to support her in her endeavour. It’s great to see Cwmbran’s business owners being supported by our local customers.”

Suzanne Mainwaring, Director of the Noah’s Ark Appeal, said: “We are so thankful for Susan’s fundraising efforts. It is thanks to individuals like Susan that the Noah’s Ark Appeal is able to raise significant funds for the Children’s Hospital in Wales and help so many children. We hope Susan will continue to support us in the future.”
