St David’s Hospice extends invitation for people to visit its new home

Gwent hospice at home charity St David’s is inviting people to come to take a look around the new, £3m day centre which they moved into recently.

The Day Care Hospice and chemotherapy outreach clinic at Blackett Avenue, Malpas, Newport offers traditional day hospice activities together with complementary therapies, children’s support services, carers and bereavement groups.

The state of the art day hospice, built by opco, includes a consultant in palliative medicine and a chemotherapy outreach clinic.

The centre also houses a Unicorn Project room sponsored by Western Power Distribution (WPD), which is the new base for St David’s pioneering Unicorn Project which works with children who have a significant adult in their life, such as a parent, who has a life threatening illness or has died suddenly.

Emma Saysell, Chief Executive of St David’s Foundation, said the new day hospice marked the beginning of a new era, after 33 years, in the history of St. David’s Foundation.

“We’re very proud of what we have here in Newport and are extremely enthusiastic about inviting people to come and have a look around this marvellous centre and see what we do in Malpas. We are particularly keen to invite local groups and organisations to visit and also businesses.

“The new day hospice is already playing a very significant part in the lives of our patients. There has been no day hospice in Newport since 1998 and this fantastic new centre enables us to support our patients and their families through what can be a very difficult time.”
