UK’s biggest online cycle store expands in wake of GB victory

One of the UK’s biggest online cycling retailers, based in Portsmouth, has moved its ambitious growth plan into the fast lane.

With Team GB’s medal haul at the London Olympics and Bradley Wiggins’ recent Tour de France victory throwing cycling into the UK spotlight, Wiggle is currently undertaking an aggressive growth plan.

And when the Portsmouth-based firm acquired two new facilities in the Harbourgate Development to accommodate its increasing workforce and stock it turned to space solutions company, Spaceway, to transform the spaces into efficient and highly-profitable environments.

Spaceway, which specialises in space solutions such as mezzanine floors, was selected for the £500,000 project to design and fit out a new warehouse, office and bulk pallet storage facility for Wiggle.

After careful inspection of both the 30,000 sq ft office/warehouse building and the 25,000 sq ft storage building, Spaceway’s designers devised a concept that would make the very most of every inch of space in each location.

Within the office/warehouse building Spaceway’s installation team worked hard to complete the works over just 12 weeks so that Wiggle’s expansion plans could be put into action as quickly as possible.

The office was created over three floors and Spaceway’s team built mezzanine floors and partitioning systems to make the most efficient use of space. All the existing facilities were completely refurbished and kitchens and cupboards were installed to create a comfortable working environment for Wiggle’s growing workforce.

The warehouse was fitted with high bay pallet racking, multi-tier pallet racking, mezzanine floors, specialist bike racks and other features to ensure every inch of space was used to its full potential.

Wiggle’s other new building was transformed in just six weeks, with high bay pallet racking installed to accommodate over 2,000 pallet positions. External repairs were also carried out and a new access point between the two buildings was created.

Nick Pink, Operations Director at Wiggle, said: “2012 is an incredibly exciting time for UK cycling. The Olympics and the Tour de France have inspired people across the country to take up this great sport and we have been sure to prepare ourselves for the inevitable increase in business that this will create with our latest expansion project. Having worked with Spaceway for many years and knowing that it has such a firm understanding of our business, the choice to appoint the company for this project was an easy one.”

Malcolm Jeary, Spaceway’s Managing Director, added: “Seeing expansion projects such as these reach the finish line is perhaps one of the most rewarding parts of the job. We are incredibly proud to have such a successful company like Wiggle in Hampshire and to be able to help it grow even further through clever use of space planning is an honour.”
