Huntingdon House facelift underway

Work is progressing well at Hanningtons Estate which is now just twelve months off completion. By the end of Summer 2018, Brighton will have a new Lane and new spaces for shops, restaurants and cafes.

Following the demolition of Timpsons and work to reveal and restore the historic 17th century Pugets Cottage, Redevco’s contractor Westridge has now started to refurbish Huntingdon House on North Street.

The strategy for Huntingdon House is a two-phase approach and work is well underway on Phase 1, which is the comprehensive cosmetic overhaul and redecoration of the upper parts of the building and canopy.

Phase 1 will also include the installation of a large vertical sign to direct customers through into the Lanes from North St. The signage will provide a highly visible link from North Laines to The Lanes to encourage cross movement of pedestrian traffic.

Dependent on ongoing retailer discussions, Phase 2 is likely to include new shop fronts and the installation of a new glazed frontage on the corner of Meeting House Lane.

Construction timetable for Huntingdon House Phase 1 improvements:

Clean main façade – from 29/8
Repair works – from 05/9
Decoration – from 26/09
Signage Works – from 10/10
Scaffold removed – by 30/10
Hoarding removed – by 30/10
All remaining works completed – by 24/11

Redevco started redeveloping the 1.3 acre site, which includes the former Hanningtons department store or ‘Harrods of Brighton’, in February.

Andrew Foulds, Portfolio Director at Redevco comments, “Our Masterplan approach should provide a catalyst for the whole area. We have also demolished a building at the rear of the site and reconfigured some existing space, but people should start to see significant investment and improvements over the next few months. Signage is incredibly important to retailers already on Meeting House Lane and beyond, so we are looking forward to getting larger, bolder and more permanent wayfinding signage installed as soon as possible.”

Retail units will be available as early as Summer 2018 – from between 250 sq ft and 850 sq ft in the new Hanningtons Lane and 1,350 sq ft to 8,500 sq ft on North Street. Please contact KLM and GCW for details.
