A new timelapse video from Friargate Coventry shows the installation of around 1,000 tonnes of steel framing from the ground up, making the first Friargate building – set to be occupied by Coventry City Council next year – a visible Coventry landmark.
The completion of the steelwork means that Bowmer & Kirkland – the contractor responsible for delivering the inaugural building – can start work on its concrete cladding. Around 300 pre-cast cladding panels – each weighing eight tonnes – will be craned onto the building over the next 12 weeks.
Designed by internationally-renowned architects Allies & Morrison, this first Friargate building will be a striking, 13 storey, red-bricked office block which will house a large proportion of Coventry City Council’s office-based staff. Last month councilors at Coventry City Council also gave the go ahead for the second Friargate building – which will offer over 100,000 sq ft of Grade A space over 14 storeys, a glazed pavilion at top level offering stunning city views and a double height ground floor with restaurant/café.
Spanning 37 acres, Friargate is a £100 million business-led scheme that is transforming Coventry city centre. It will comprise 14 grade A office blocks, two hotels, homes and shops and create up to 15,000 jobs.
