North Somerset Enterprise Agency (NSEA) has announced training events taking place in May to support start-up, small and growing businesses at The Hive, North Somerset’s business development centre.

7 May – Financial Planning Clinic @ The Hive (sessions available all day)

Enabling attendees to enjoy one-to-one advice on financial issues and questions from Chartered Accountant Tony James, a specialist in business services for SMEs.  Free to pre-start businesses and those trading less than a year or £40 including VAT for those trading over a year.

7 May – Intellectual Property Advice Clinic @ The Hive 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m.

Organised by Business West in conjunction with NSEA this advice clinic, which is free to local business owners and entrepreneurs, offers one-to-one meetings with an experienced Intellectual Property (IP) Advisor, who can advise and provide information and impartial strategic expertise on how to protect, understand and utilise their IP in order to gain significant competitive advantage.

13 May – North Somerset Business Club meeting @ The Hive from 5.30 p.m.

With over 200 members and growing, North Somerset Business Club provides excellent networking opportunities for the business people of North Somerset. The club also raises and contributes significant amounts of money to North Somerset charities.  At bi-,monthly evening meetings members are kept up to date with the latest business issues, usually with guest speakers who are experts in their field. The meetings also give members the opportunity to network and inter-trade with others within the local business community and share and discuss pressing business issues that commonly arise. Annual membership is just £36 per annum including VAT.

20 May – Starting in Business Course – Day 1 @ The Hive

Day one of a three day course which helps new businesses get the essentials right.  Free for anyone starting a business based in North Somerset and sponsored by North Somerset Council, it provides information and guidance to help deal with three key issues that will be fundamental to the performance and success of a business.  The course is delivered by an experienced advisor and offers the opportunity for delegates to raise questions or problems they may have.

Day 1 – Getting the Basics Right (In association with Barclays Bank) – includes: What is and why complete a business plan; Contents of the business plan; Reasons for failure; Legal status and business names; Income tax and National Insurance; VAT; Health & Safety; Premises; Insurances; Contracts, terms and conditions; Intellectual property rights and Employment Law.

21 May – Starting in Business Course – Day 2 @ The Hive

Day 2 – Making Money and Making a Profit – includes: Calculating start-up costs and ongoing costs;  Break even calculations and viability; Financial Records and book-keeping; Invoicing; Profit & loss, cash flow forecasts and Balance Sheets statements; Raising money and funding; Financial planning and Writing and presenting your business plan.

Day 3 – Finding and Keeping Customers Business Planning – includes: Marketing principles; Marketing Research; Assessing the competition; Profiling your customers; Customer care; Pricing your profits; Promotion, image, advertising, websites etc.; Selling skills and Marketing plan.

The business start-up course is concluded by a summary of all the three days content enabling delegates to produce a comprehensive plan for their business.
