Giant German discount supermarket retailer Aldi have recently acquired the former ‘Remploy’ premises in Porth, Rhondda Cynon Taff.
The property was sold by Bridgend-based commercial property consultancy DLP Surveyors who acted on behalf of Disabled People’s Employment Corporation (GB) Limited (formerly ‘Remploy’). The purchasers were represented by Andrew Thomas Property Consultants.
The property is situated just to the north-west of Porth town centre, and prominently located alongside the A4058 Cymmer Road close to the roundabout adjacent to the Porth by-pass bridge. Comprising a former manufacturing premises of 55,000 sq.ft. on 2.3 ac. the property was vacated back in 2013 following central Government re-organisation and rationalisation of the nationwide Remploy operation.
Following this acquisition Aldi plan to demolish the existing structure and replace it with a new 19,000 sq.ft. store and associated car parking scheduled to be opened early 2018.
Following the sale of the property Michael Bruce of selling agents DLP Surveyors commented, “Despite the obvious disappointment to Porth of the initial ‘Remploy’ closure we are pleased that this site will be redeveloped as part of a new multi-million pound investment scheme. Further we feel that once the new store is opened that it will compliment existing retail operations in Porth and enhance the growing reputation of the town as a shopping destination at the gateway to the Rhondda.”
Andy Thomas of Andrew Thomas Property Consultants, who represented Aldi, commented, “Having acquired the property our clients are to redevelop the site and erect a new 18,740 sq.ft. food-store with car parking. We have been supported in our development proposals throughout the process by the planners at RCTCBC, for which the new scheme will include a new access onto the site from Cymmer Road. The new development will create up to 30 new jobs for the town.”
