Telford Business Club in trip to home of modern Olympic Games

Members of Telford Business Club will be celebrating the Olympics with a trip to Much Wenlock this month.

The monthly network meeting usually held at The Shropshire in Muxton will be replaced with a guided tour of the Museum in the Square in Much Wenlock before the business club members enjoy a walk of the Olympian Trial.

The social event on August 14 will be finished off with a chance to network during a meal at the George and Dragon pub.

Neil Phillips, member of Telford Business Club – the oldest networking club in Shropshire – said he had already started his own celebrations by taking part in the Much Wenlock Olympian Games in memory of his Uncle Bill who was an Olympian champion and hoped other businesses would embrace the event.

Mr Phillips, of Phillips Chartered Accountants, said: “People who know me will know I am extremely passionate about sport and particularly the home of the modern day Olympics and its links with William Penny Brookes.

“I have already had the privilege of visiting the museum which was outstanding.

“We hope the existing members of Telford Business Club will enjoy the trip but also any visitors who would like to come along.

“We are a relaxed, friendly club who support each other in business growth and open to any business men and women regardless of the size or nature of their business.”

Mr Phillips added: “In the museum a magnificent collection of Wenlock Olympian Society artefacts are on display illustrating the significant role of Much Wenlock in the revival of the Modern Olympic Games.

“The Trail will take you past some of the sites in the town which are special to the Wenlock Olympian Games and Dr William Penny Brookes.”

The walk is about 1.3 miles and members should wear suitable footwear.

People who pre-book a place on the minibus should meet at The Shropshire in Muxton at 5.45pm, while people using their own transport should meet at the museum at 6pm.

A pie supper and drink will be served at the pub at 8pm and the mini-bus will return to The Shropshire at 9.30pm.

The cost of the event for members travelling on the mini-bus is £5 and £15 for non-members. It is free for members who provide their own transport and £10 for members.

There will be 16 mini-bus places on a first come first served basis.
