Swansea Bay Business Club announces Alan Johnson MP as Guest Speaker at May event

Alan Johnson MP is to be the guest speaker at Swansea Bay Business Club’s first event at the Brangwyn Hall in seven years as the club returns to the iconic venue for its 2017 flagship lunch.

The event on May 19 will see guests hear from the Labour MP as the country gears up for the recently announced snap general election and comes after he recently announced he will not stand as a candidate.

Hayley Davies, President of Swansea Bay Business Club, said: “We are looking ahead to our flagship lunch on May 19 with Alan Johnson MP with great excitement and anticipation. Our flagship event is always one of the biggest and best events of our season and this promises to be no different. With the upcoming general election and Brexit very high on the public agenda, there is no better time to hear from someone with first hand experience of frontline British politics.”

Alan Johnson first became a Labour MP in 1997 and subsequently worked in politics for over a decade. He came second in the contest for Deputy Leader of the Opposition in 2007, was made Secretary of State for Health under Gordon Brown, served as Home Secretary during 2009 and 2010 and then served as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer under Ed Miliband until his resignation in 2011.

Alan will be discussing his career in British politics as well giving his views on the upcoming general election, Brexit and the current political climate across the country. He will also be participating in a Q&A with guests.

The event follows on from the club’s April lunch with former Welsh rugby union player, endurance athlete and Sport Wales board member, Richard Parks. Hayley added: “Hearing Richard’s talk was as inspirational as it was fascinating. From overcoming his career-ending injury to taking on new challenges and flourishing in his post-rugby career, his speech provided guests with a fascinating insight in to his life and gave great advice in how to tackle adversity head on.”

May’s lunch will take place at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea on Friday May 19th. Tickets are priced at £40 per member and £45.50 for non-members. This includes a three-course meal. Guests are asked to arrive at 12:15pm for a 1pm lunch.
