Fish farming in the desert may sound like science fiction – but a new firm based in Plymouth will help turn the dream into a reality – and create new jobs in the process.
Nova Scotia–based Sustainable Fish Farming Canada is to open a subsidiary business in Plymouth supplying fish farm pumps, tanks and equipment to the Middle East.
The fish farming pioneers have taken 14,500 ft at Unit M on Eagle Road – part of the Langage Business Park – following a deal brokered by Bruton Knowles’ Plymouth office.
The new operators will use the Devon base to service a variety of clients in Saudi Arabia, UAR and Dubai. A number of new jobs are likely to be created.
Mark Slade from Bruton Knowles’ Lockyer Street base said: “Fish farming is becoming big business in the Middle East, where hi-tech ‘farms’ the size several football pitches are supporting normal sea-caught supplies.
“The new techniques have been developed in North America and Canada and are now being rolled out in the Middle East. The new systems cause less harm to wild fish since there is no chance of diseases reaching the sea or of farmed fish escaping into the wild.
“For ease of exporting SFFC have set up the business on a four-year underlease at the Langage facility. This is the second large deal we have completed on in Langage having let over 20,000 sqft for Plymouth City Council in the middle of last year’.
