The first shipping containers set to be transformed into the second phase of Wapping Wharf’s CARGO arrived on site today (Wednesday 14th December).

CARGO 2 – part of Bristol’s first retail yard made of converted shipping containers – will be home to a host of businesses, including the following announced today:

  • Gambas – Gambas is the sister restaurant to Bristol’s favourite tapas bar, Bravas, and will be specialising in prawns, seafood and authentic Andalusian tapas.
  • Mabboo – Mabboo is an independent Bristol-based retailer specialising solely in clothing and accessories made using the world’s most sustainable plant, Bamboo.
  • Salt & Malt – Chef and restaurateur, Josh Eggleton, will open a second Salt & Malt, serving signature gluten free fish and chips, as well as holding popup events and tasting menus. Salt & Malt Cargo will include an outdoor terrace with stunning views of The Matthew and Bristol’s Floating Harbour.
  • The Athenian – The Athenian is a street food endeavour following in the steps of traditional Greek souvlaki.
  • John Kelly 1880+ – Selling design-led jewellery, silver and metalware, circa 1880 to the present day, with a slant toward post-war Scandinavian and British design.
  • Pure Yoga – Pure Yoga will be offering lunchtime express classes as well as early morning and evening classes for all levels.
  • CUPP Bubble Tea – CUPP specialises in authentic Taiwanese bubble tea and noodles. CARGO will be CUPP’s third opening in Bristol.
  • The Pickled Brisket – Bristol’s first dedicated salt beef bar, serving locally-sourced hot salt beef sandwiches.
  • Oliver’s Ice Cream Ltd – Oliver’s is coming to CARGO with a proven track record in making artisan Italian ice cream (gelato) and sorbets from almost entirely natural ingredients.
  • Loop Massage – Loop will be a small, perfectly formed oasis of calm, offering bespoke, affordable massage to the frazzled people of Bristol.
  • TARE – TARE will be a 20-cover restaurant, with a menu regularly changing throughout the year allowing the team to work with the season’s best local produce.
  • Story @ Cargo – Story @ Cargo aims to become the neighbourhood butchery and take-away dedicated to using whole animals as much as possible, raised responsibly, often organic and always free-range.
  • Roots Manuka – Roots Manuka will offer well-researched, healthy products.
  • Pizzarova – Pizzarova opened 12 months ago on Gloucester Road. This will be their second fixed site selling delicious, fast, sourdough pizzas.
  • Big Juice – Big Juice will provide nutritional, freshly-prepared fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies.

Stuart Hatton, director at Umberslade, the developer behind CARGO, said: “We’ve worked hard to strike a balance so that each business complements one another, and together they provide a fantastic offering. We are really excited to see these new shipping containers arrive at Wapping Wharf and look forward to seeing this new, thriving community continue to grow and flourish.”

Josh Eggleton said: “We’ve been thinking about a second Salt & Malt for a while now, but it was all about the right location. It was always important that any other Salt & Malt locations would be by the water, it needed to have that waterfront, and community vibe and CARGO 2 is the perfect spot for that.”

Kieran Waite, founder of Gambas & Bravas tapas bars, said: “We are inspired by the casual and fun dining culture in Spain and are excited to create a new tapas bar. All of our guest will be counter dining with a front row view of the delicious food being grilled and fried in the kitchen. Gambas is sure to provide a great buzz and an authentic tapas experience.”

Edward Cheney, founder of Mabboo, said: “Mabboo has grown organically over the years, just like our beloved bamboo. We’re a proudly independent team based out of Southville, Bristol. Our purpose is to create the most beautifully crafted items from bamboo, which we hope our customers will love and as much as we’ve enjoyed creating.”

Efthymios Vasilakis, founder and director of The Athenian, said: “We cannot wait to open our first site in Bristol and offer our Athenian Souvlaki to the local community!”

Amelia Hodge, owner of Pure Yoga, said: “I’m so excited to join the other independent occupiers at Wapping Wharf. My vision for the space is that it will be a hub of healthy activity including meditation groups, yoga classes for all levels, guest teachers, mindfulness workshops, teacher training and lots more! Pure Yoga will be offering lunchtime express classes as well as early morning and evening classes.”

Angharad Jackson, director of CUPP Bubble Tea, said “We’re excited about opening our second bubble tea shipping container in Bristol at CARGO. CUPP is unique in the way we make our bubble teas; using only fresh fruit, fresh milk and quality ingredients. Serving our bubble teas at this unique and innovative retail space is what makes CARGO so appealing and exciting.”

Polly Meech of Loop Massage said: “I firmly believe that if you feel better in your body you will be calmer in your mind. Everybody needs help to carve out the time to do this; to decompress from hectic lives, to relieve the aches and pains of the daily grind, to unwind and heal. I’m very excited that Loop Massage is to join the wealth of amazing businesses that are making Wapping Wharf and CARGO 2 an exciting, new hub in the heart of Bristol.”

Matt Hampshire, head chef / proprietor at TARE, said: “Our aim is to offer an interesting range of dishes alongside a small and well balanced wine list, served in a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. We will be open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday.”

John Kelly, owner of John Kelly 1880+, said: “John Kelly 1880+ strives as an independent local dealer to offer very different jewels and silver to those you are likely to come across in many outlets these days. Everybody is different, and so should be their jewellery. It says something about you. It should make a statement, rather like the whole CARGO development!”

David Jutsum, director at Oliver’s Ice Cream, said: “We are excited to be coming to Wapping Wharf with its new-found reputation of being the place to go. It suits our ethos well because we are an innovative artisan ice cream producer, which belies our reputation which literally extends as far afield as USA and New Zealand (plus all points in the UK!). We will be bringing to CARGO a vast range of new and traditional flavours and products, all made fresh in the Italian way, plus waffles, crèpes, ice cream cakes, monoporzione (individual portions), and we’ll be diversifying into other areas too.”

Luke Hassell, who heads up the team at Story @ Cargo and is a farmer and founder of the Community farm, The Story in the Chew Valley and Eat Drink Bristol Fashion, said: “The take-away and butcher shop will cohabit in the CARGO space and will create a beautiful lifecycle for whole animals – beef, pork, lamb, chicken, rabbit and duck.  The animals all come from farms that are organic or part of the Pasture Fed Livestock Association. Our suppliers have been hand-picked with the highest regard to animal husbandry and ultimate tastiness for our customers.”

Alex Corbett, founder of Pizzarova, said: “Having traded last summer down at Wapping Wharf out of our mobile crate, we are very excited about bringing Pizzarova back to the area and into one of the units in CARGO 2.”

John Le Fevre, co-founder of Big Juice, said: “We’ve been in St Nicholas Market for over 15 years – we are passionate about health and nutrition through good food and we provide something quite unique. This will be our second juice bar in Bristol.”

Forty nine containers will make up CARGO 2, with the businesses occupying 38 of them and mainly shopping on the ground floor and restaurants above. It will be located adjacent to CARGO 1, which includes 18 containers. CARGO 1 is already open and home to Woky Ko, Chicken Shed, Shambarber, The Mighty Quinns Flower Emporium, PIGSTY, Bristol Cider Shop, BOX-E, Lovett Pies and Corks of Cargo.

When complete, the Wapping Wharf community, Bristol’s newest harbourside quarter and one of the city’s most significant developments, will include over 600 new homes as well as a range of independent retailers. Mokoko, Better Food, Bertha’s Pizza, Little Victories and Wild Beer Co are already open along Gaol Ferry Steps, with Biblos and Fig 1 due to open soon.

The first phase of the Wapping Wharf neighbourhood is now complete, comprising 194 homes, with phase two, which will include over 320 new homes, coming next.

JLL is the agent acting on behalf of Umberslade for retail lettings at Wapping Wharf. CARGO 2 is due to open in early 2017.
