Bid to improve Cardiff gets underway

A recruitment drive is underway to find a number of local ambassadors who will be tasked with leading a key initiative to improve Cardiff’s City Centre.

The Cardiff Business Improvement District (BID) has been designed to deliver improvements to Cardiff, ensuring it continues to develop and to provide great business opportunities, whilst remaining an exciting and vibrant city, attracting visitors and increasing footfall.

One of the BID’s flagship projects is The Ambassadors Scheme, which has created employment opportunities with the BID for up to 10 City Centre Ambassadors and a Team Leader.

Successful ambassadors will be responsible for day-to-day liaison with city centre retail, leisure and office based businesses located within the BID area, ensuring operational issues are resolved quickly, providing key support and advice to visitors to improve their experience when visiting the Capital City.

Owen Davies led the team that helped set up Cardiff BID and is currently helping with the Cardiff BID’s recruitment drive.

Owen said: “It’s absolutely brilliant that the Cardiff BID is moving forward and I am confident that it will make a big difference to all the businesses involved. Establishing a strong BID team is a crucial step in ensuring the BID gets off to the best possible start and we are on the hunt for talented and aspirational individuals.

“The nature of the BID is that businesses can choose how best to spend any money they raise and we find that this involvement motivates them to make the scheme a definite success. Past projects have focused on marketing and promotion, increased ‘cleaning and greening’, lobbying and advocacy to ensure that businesses are heard. Ultimately, it’s up to each BID to decide what would most benefit their own area.”

Leading multi-specialist Welsh recruitment company Acorn has been tasked with finding candidates suitable for the role.

Katrina Raposo, one of Acorn’s Managers, who is helping to source applicants for the vacant BID roles, said: “This is an extremely exciting project for the city and we’re expecting a lot of interest in these new positions. We’re looking for jobseekers that have excellent local knowledge and are enthusiastic about ensuring Cardiff City Centre thrives.

“If successful as a City Centre Ambassador or Team Leader, candidates will get the opportunity to be the eyes and ears on the streets, improving vistor experience and acting as a vital source of information. If you’re a Cardiff advocate, these jobs are perfect and I’d urge you to apply.”

Legislation to enable BIDs was introduced in 2004 and since then, there have been over 180 BIDs UK-wide, helping businesses fund projects and provide services that fall outside the remit of the local council and the police. The scheme will raise £7.5million which will be directed back into the city.
