Sanderson Weatherall to market unique café and rooftop restaurant at South Shields digital media centre, The Word

Newcastle chartered surveyor and property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall has been appointed to market a new café-bar and roof-top restaurant opportunity at a new state of the art library and digital media centre in South Shields.

The Word, the North East Centre for the Written Word, will be the jewel in the crown of the £100 million regeneration of South Shields, which aims to improve links between the town centre, Riverside and Foreshore and create stronger connectivity to the area.

Sanderson Weatherall is offering an established restaurateur the opportunity to take a full repairing and insuring lease on an exceptional roof top restaurant at the venue, at a proposed rental commencing at £55,000 per annum.

The 3315 sq ft restaurant will be provided to shell specification ready for fit-out and incorporates covered space and an outdoor terrace. A fully fitted commercial kitchen is also included.

A 1300 sq ft ground floor café with a generous external terrace is also offered with the same lease terms at a proposed rental starting at £20,000 per annum.

Sanderson Weatherall’s head of commercial agency in Newcastle, Robert Patterson said: “Once complete The Word will be an iconic public building in the heart of South Shields town centre offering high specification space. The town has a thriving retail and leisure market and a café-bar and restaurant at this high profile location is sure to be a huge success attracting local residents and tourists alike. We certainly expect to see a lot of interest in both opportunities.”

The project by Muse Developments in partnership with South Tyneside Council will bring an extended cultural offer to South Tyneside. The Word will mix tradition and technology under one roof offering a unique experience for both residents and visitors to the town. Facilities in the three storey building will include conference and meeting rooms, performance space and a retail area. Construction works on the site began in April 2015 with completion expected by autumn 2016.

Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, added: “As the centrepiece of our 365 regeneration plan, The Word will help position South Shields as a year round visitor destination.

“A rooftop restaurant offering fantastic views and a café will enhance the appeal of this superb cultural attraction and encourage both residents and visitors to stay for longer in the town centre.”
