Original Churcher’s College sold to private investor

Acting on the instructions of Hampshire County Council, commercial property consultants Holloway, Iliffe & Mitchell has sold The Old College in Petersfield to a private investor.

The Old College was originally constructed in 1727 and two years later money was bequeathed by local philanthropist Richard Churcher to establish a college in his name to train a small number of local young boys in writing, mathematics and navigation for apprenticeship to the East India Company. The numbers soon expanded and the College moved to its current site on Ramshill in 1881.

The building was subsequently Grade II* listed in 1949 and went on to become the local Registry Office until the service was relocated into the town centre.

Commenting on the sale, Craig Powell, Associate Director at Holloway Iliffe & Mitchell said:
“The Old College has been part of Petersfield’s heritage for nearly 300 years and is now included in the local Conservation Area. Many of the original features of this historical building have been preserved since its construction and these will be retained as part of its listed status.”

The sale of The Old College is the second transaction by Holloway Iliffe & Mitchell on behalf of Hampshire County Council and follows the sale of neighbouring offices, Tilbrook House acquired by local technology business InSync Technology. Both buildings benefit from landscaped gardens with Tilmore Brook running through the grounds.
